Hello, I’m Stegosaurus Stella

Hello friends, I’m Stegosaurus, or Stella for short. My name means "roofed lizard." That sounds funny, doesn't it? I got that name because the rows of large, kite-shaped plates along my back look a bit like shingles on a roof! I lived during the Late Jurassic Period in the places you now call Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah. While I look pretty tough with my plates and spikes, I’m actually quite friendly!

I have four dangerous spikes on the end of my tail to protect myself.

My plates aren't attached to my skeleton; they actually sit in my skin.
What Did I Eat?
I am a herbivore, so I only eat plants, but I eat differently from my friends. While cows (and Edmontonia) grind their food side-to-side, my jaws can only move up and down! I have special leaf-shaped teeth that chop plants up before I swallow them.
Did You Know?
For a long time, scientists didn't have a good name for the spikes on the end of my tail. But in 1982, a cartoonist named Gary Larson drew a comic calling the spikes a "Thagomizer." Scientists loved the name so much, they actually started using it! Now, my tail spikes are informally known as thagomizers!
