Pachyrhinosaurus

Hello, I’m Pachyrhinosaurus Penny

(pack-ee-rhine-oh-saw-rus)

Well, hello there! I’m Penny, the Pachyrhinosaurus. My name is a big mouthful, isn't it? It means "thick-nosed lizard." If you look closely at my face, you won’t see sharp horns on my nose like my cousin, the Triceratops. Instead, I have a massive, flattened rocky growth called a "boss." It’s like a built-in helmet! I lived during the Late Cretaceous Period right here in North America. But do you want to know my favorite thing to do? I love posing for pictures! I am the friendliest dinosaur in the herd, and I have a strong, sturdy back, so climb aboard.

FUN FACTS

  • Climb Aboard: I am a special "Photo Op" dinosaur! That means kids—and grown-ups too—are welcome to climb up and sit on my back for a picture!

  • I have two big horns that grow out of my frill (the shield behind my head) and point upwards.

  • My family could grow to be 26 feet long! That’s plenty of room for you and your friends to hop on!

  • What Did I Eat?

I am a herbivore, so I stick to a salad diet. Because the plants back in the Cretaceous period were very tough and fibrous, I needed help chewing them. Luckily, I have very strong "cheek teeth" that help me grind up even the toughest leaves and branches.

  • Did You Know?

Scientists think that the big, flat bony pads over my nose and eyes were used for pushing matches—kind of like how muskoxen or deer butt heads today! But don’t worry, I won’t push you. I’m just here to help you take the best dinosaur selfie ever. So come on, hop up and say "Cheese!"
