Jambo! I’m Kentrosaurus Knox

(ken-tro-saw-rus)

Jambo friends! I’m Knox, the Kentrosaurus. My name means "Spike Lizard," and if you look at my tail, you can see why! I originally came from a very beautiful place called Tanzania in Africa. My family fossils were found in the famous Tendaguru beds. I lived a very long time ago—back in the Jurassic Period, about 150 million years ago. Even though I have a lot of spikes, I’m actually a very chill dinosaur who just loves to eat and hang out with the herd.

FUN FACTS

  • Business in the Front, Party in the Back: I have a very unique style! I have a double row of flat, bony plates on the front half of my back (kind of like my cousin Stegosaurus), but halfway down, those plates turn into sharp spikes that go all the way to the end of my tail!

  • I grew to be about 17 feet long—that’s about the size of a large minivan.

  • I weighed around 2 tons, which is as heavy as a rhinoceros!

  • What Did I Eat?

I am a quadruped (I walk on four legs) and a herbivore (I eat plants). I have a very interesting mouth for eating dinner. I have a toothless beak in the front that I use to snip off leaves, and then I use the small teeth hidden in my cheeks to chew them up.

  • Did You Know?

Because my legs are shorter in the front than in the back, my center of gravity is very low. This helps me stand my ground! Also, those long spikes on my tail aren't just for decoration—I could swing them at predators to keep myself safe!
