Edmontonia

Hello, I’m Edmontonia Eddie

(ed·mon·tone·ee·uh)

Hello friends, I’m Edmontonia, or Eddie for short. My name might sound like a place on a map—and that is because it is! I was named after the Edmonton rock formation in Canada, where I was found way back in 1924. Today, I’m hanging out outside Margaritaville Restaurant. I lived during the Late Cretaceous Period (145 - 66 million years ago). I am built like a tough, walking tank! I have heavy armor all over my body to keep me safe from other dinosaurs.

FUN FACTS

  • I could grow to be 22 feet long! That is about as long as a large moving truck!

  • I stood about 6 feet tall! That means I am just about as tall as a really tall grown-up!

  • My skin was covered in bony lumps called "osteoderms." It’s like wearing a permanent suit of armor!

  • What Did I Eat?

I am a quadruped, which means I walk on all four legs. I am also a herbivore, so I only eat plants! Because I am low to the ground, I don't eat from tall trees. Instead, I graze on low-growing plants and ferns.

  • Did You Know?

I have a superpower hidden in my nose! Scientists think that because I had such large nasal passages inside my skull, I had a highly developed sense of smell. I could probably smell a tasty snack—or a predator—from very far away!
