Amargasaurus

Hola! I’m Amargasaurus Poco

(ah-mar-gah-saw-rus)

Hola! I’m Poco, the Amargasaurus. I might look small right now, but I have big dreams! My name comes from the place where my family was first discovered—a canyon in Argentina called "La Amarga." We lived there during the Early Cretaceous Period, which was about 130 million years ago. Even though I’m just a baby, you can already see the coolest thing about me: the double row of spines running down my neck and back!

FUN FACTS

  • I’m Going to Be HUGE: Right now I’m little, but when I grow up, I will be 40 feet long and weigh 8 tons! That is as heavy as a school bus!

  • Check Out My Spines: Scientists think my tall spines are used to show off to friends or to scare away rivals. I think they just make me look cool!

  • Look at My Feet: My feet look a lot like an elephant’s feet. I have five toes on each foot to help hold me up when I get big.

  • What Do I Eat?

I am a quadruped, which means I walk on all four legs. Just like my friend Brachiosaurus Beatrice, I am a herbivore! I love to eat plants. Because my head is small and close to the ground, I like to snack on low ferns and bushes.

  • Did You Know?

I may be cute, but I can defend myself! I have a very long, whip-like tail that I use for protection. Also, I never travel alone—Amargasaurus dinosaurs travel in herds, so my mom and dad are always nearby to watch out for me!
